What if your IT team could find an incident, assess a change’s risk and update the ticket without leaving ChatGPT? That’s the promise of the expanded ServiceNow and OpenAI partnership announced this week.
The centerpiece is a new ServiceNow plugin for ChatGPT, available now in the OpenAI marketplace. It runs on ServiceNow Action Fabric, which means actions still execute inside ServiceNow with the customer’s business rules, permissions and approvals intact.
Four pieces to the deal
Beyond the plugin, the companies are working on three more things. First, a joint security solution that combines OpenAI’s cybersecurity capabilities with ServiceNow’s asset, access and enterprise context to identify, triage, validate and fix attack paths. ServiceNow notes that a codebase scan can surface anywhere from 10,000 to 100,000 or more vulnerabilities, and the hard part is knowing which ones matter now.
Second, Codex will be integrated into ServiceNow’s AI Workflow Factory, and OpenAI models will power its Build Agent and Autonomous Engineer. Third, OpenAI voice models will power a voice experience in ServiceNow’s Super Intelligence Control Tower, where a risk professional can describe an AI use case aloud and have an agent fill in the assessment.
OpenAI is also a founding member of ServiceNow’s new Control Tower Alliance. Each company plans to use the other internally: OpenAI will run ServiceNow across its operations, and ServiceNow plans to give employees ChatGPT Work and Codex.
“AI becomes more useful when people can put it to work in the systems their businesses depend on,” said OpenAI president Greg Brockman.
Timeline
The MCP plugin is available today, with enhanced capabilities expected by the end of 2026. Voice in the Control Tower is expected in the first quarter of 2027. The security capabilities enter early access in January 2027, with general availability planned for the second quarter, and Codex in AI Workflow Factory is expected in 2027.
Why it matters
The big AI labs want their assistants to become the front door to enterprise work, and system-of-record platforms like ServiceNow want to stay the place where actions are governed. Expect more of these pairings across ITSM, CRM and HR.
For ServiceNow partners and IT service management consultancies, this opens fresh conversations about AI-enabled service desks and governance. Buyers will need help connecting, securing and measuring these integrations, and that’s a strong outbound hook for the next two quarters.
