Microsoft's AI PC Roadmap Splits Windows Machines Into Four Tiers, From 8GB Laptops to Desktop Supercomputers

How much memory does an AI PC really need? Microsoft’s answer appears to be: it depends on the job.

Slides from Microsoft’s AI PC roadmap, shared on X by a user known as “HXL” and reported by Windows Central, show four tiers of Windows hardware under the heading “Windows is the home for hybrid intelligence.”

The four tiers

Tier 0 covers Windows PCs with 8GB of RAM running chips such as Intel Core Series 3 or 4, AMD Ryzen 100 or 200, and Snapdragon X or X Plus. Tier 1 is Copilot+ PCs with 16GB to 64GB of RAM, from the Snapdragon X2 Plus up to the AMD Ryzen AI MAX+ 400.

Tier 2 is “builder” PCs for building and running AI models locally, with chips including Intel Core Ultra Next, NVIDIA RTX Spark and AMD Ryzen AI MAX+ 400. Tier 3 is supercomputer-class systems for running frontier models locally, with processors such as Intel Crescent Island, the NVIDIA GB300 DGX Station and AMD Next chips.

Hybrid, not either-or

The common thread is hybrid intelligence: workloads split between local hardware and the cloud depending on the task. Lower tiers would lean more on the cloud, while higher tiers would mostly run locally. Microsoft has not officially published the slides.

Why it matters

Memory is becoming the main way to segment business PCs for AI. That affects refresh budgets, device standards and how IT teams decide which staff get which machines.

For hardware resellers, MSPs and endpoint vendors, a simple tier framework is a useful way to talk with buyers about matching devices to AI workloads. Helping customers avoid over- or under-buying is a strong conversation starter.
