Amazon Lets Shoppers Text Alexa — After Blocking Meta’s Muse

Amazon wants the shopping agent conversation to happen on its own terms — by text.

On November 6, 2026, Amazon said it is launching a feature that lets customers chat with Alexa over text messages to shop, TechCrunch reported. The rollout comes after Amazon blocked Meta’s Muse from querying its site in September, and lands just before the U.S. holiday shopping season.

What the text agent can do

Select U.S. customers receive a text asking them to enable the shopping feature. With access, they can use natural language to search items, add to cart and purchase. The agent builds on recent Alexa shopping upgrades: manage lists, track prices, search across the web, compare products, check order status, and share a photo of an item or outfit to find similar Amazon listings. Over time, Amazon says Alexa will learn preferences and suggest items. Users not invited can join a waitlist; broader rollout is planned in the coming weeks.

Platforms vs. third-party agents

As consumer AI agents proliferate, large platforms are prioritizing first-party text agents. TechCrunch noted DoorDash said third-party agents had placed only hundreds of orders on its platform and plans to push its own September-launched text agent further — a similar pattern to Amazon’s block-then-build approach.

Why it matters

Retail and marketplace platforms are fencing product data while shipping first-party agents. Commerce, CRM and conversational vendors should expect tighter API policies and more “own the agent” roadmaps.

For B2B marketers in retail tech and contact center, the takeaway is channel control: text agents that sit inside the merchant’s brand will outrank third-party agents that scrape or proxy the catalog.
