Dropbox is making its biggest acquisition yet to become a storage layer for AI agents.
On Thursday, November 5, 2026, the company said it is buying Tigris Data for $350 million. The deal appears to be Dropbox’s largest to date. Closing is expected in the fourth quarter of 2026. Dropbox said it does not plan headcount cuts from this deal, after already cutting 9% of staff last month, according to the Wall Street Journal as reported by TechCrunch.
DBX Agent Cloud
The purchase backs DBX Agent Cloud, a new storage offering for businesses and developers building AI models and agents. It launches first as stand-alone, S3-compatible object storage. Dropbox plans to add more content types — documents, images, audio and video — and filesystem features so agents can manage files across sessions.
That sits alongside Dropbox’s broader AI push: asking AI to act on files, choosing models, and connecting Dropbox to ChatGPT, Claude and Muse. An updated experience has reached more than 70,000 teams. The initial rollout covers Standard and Advanced plans in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia, with broader availability planned for 2027.
Who Tigris is
Tigris was founded by former Uber storage engineers and focuses on multi-region data placement. The startup raised a $25 million Series A last year. The deal follows Dropbox’s earlier AI-related acquisitions of Reclaim.ai, Promoted.ai and Mobius Labs.
Why it matters
Storage for agents is becoming its own product category. File-collaboration and cloud vendors should clarify agent-ready storage and S3-compatibility stories for B2B buyers.
If you sell collaboration, backup or developer platforms, expect RFPs to ask how agents persist state and move objects without brittle custom glue.
