OpenAI Is Merging ChatGPT's Chat and Work Tabs, and ChatGPT Classic Will Retire

OpenAI is simplifying a ChatGPT desktop app that many users found confusing.

In an email to users, OpenAI said it will merge the Chat and Work tabs into one ChatGPT experience. It will first be available to a small group of users for feedback before a wider rollout. “You can bring in your files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation, or do things for you on the web, while reviewing and guiding its work,” the email said. Codex will remain a separate experience in the desktop app.

One usage pool

As part of the change, ChatGPT and Codex will draw from the same allowance instead of separate limits. OpenAI said most users won’t need to wait for resets more often than today, but usage will depend on model and task. Unlimited Instant is included in plans and will not count against the allowance, 9to5Mac reports.

Goodbye, Classic

Separately, the older ChatGPT Classic app now shows a banner saying it will retire on January 30, 2027, and that users’ full chat history carries over to the new app. TechCrunch notes that rival Anthropic merged Claude’s chat and Cowork functions into one screen in September.

Why it matters

The big AI assistants are converging on a single workspace where chatting and getting work done happen in the same place. Usage-based allowances are also becoming the norm.

For SaaS companies, that raises the bar: buyers will compare your product with what a general assistant can do. Vendors should clearly show what their tool does better, and how it plugs into these assistants, in their messaging.
