Malaysia Seizes $12 Million in AI Chip Servers Headed for Re-Export

US export rules on advanced AI chips only work if the chips stay where they’re supposed to. Malaysia just showed how hard that can be.

Malaysian customs said on Wednesday that it seized about 49.5 million ringgit, roughly $12.11 million, worth of advanced AI chips this month, according to Reuters reporting published by CNA. Officials found 30 server units containing the chips on October 15 during an inspection at Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s free trade zone.

Declared as electronic components

The shipment came from one Asian country and was set to be re-exported to another, which required a trade permit, said airport customs director Aspalila Ag Tuah.

“The servers were falsely declared as electronic components … and shipped through Malaysia to ensure there would be no restrictions imposed while being exported to the next destination,” she told reporters. A Malaysian firm that facilitated the shipment has been called in to help with the investigation.

Part of a larger network

Customs believes the same network was behind a similar attempt foiled in June. At least five cases have been linked to the syndicate, with seizures worth more than 100 million ringgit in total. Officials declined to give more details, citing the ongoing probe, and the final destination of the chips has not been disclosed.

Malaysia imposed export controls last year on the movement of advanced AI chips of US origin, after pressure from the United States to stem their flow into China.

Why it matters

Export controls are now an everyday part of the AI hardware business. For US chip makers, server OEMs and distributors, compliance and end-use checks are becoming as important as supply.

For IT hardware resellers and supply chain technology vendors, that creates demand for better tracking, screening and compliance tools. Buyers in this space respond to outreach that shows a clear understanding of these risks.
