Oracle and OpenAI Team Up to Run Business Apps Through ChatGPT, Plus a Free-to-Start Bundle for Small Firms

What if you could ask ChatGPT to approve an invoice in your ERP, and it simply did it? Oracle and OpenAI want that to be normal.

At Oracle AI World in Las Vegas on Tuesday, Oracle announced a major new collaboration with OpenAI that brings OpenAI’s models, ChatGPT and Codex together with Oracle’s applications, data and cloud infrastructure. The announcement comes with four products.

1. Oracle AI Workspace

This is the centrepiece. Through plugins in ChatGPT, employees can look up information, complete approved business workflows and take actions in Oracle systems. It is designed to connect Oracle Fusion Applications, NetSuite, Oracle AI Database, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and other enterprise tools. Oracle says people can describe a business goal and ChatGPT will pull together the right Oracle tools to help, while keeping the governance, approvals and controls companies need.

2. Oracle AI Security Mesh

A managed service that uses OpenAI’s cyber models to find and fix vulnerabilities in applications and infrastructure across OCI, other clouds and on-premises systems. Customers decide where testing is allowed and its scope, while Oracle runs the safeguards meant to avoid outages during testing. The idea is that companies don’t need to build their own agentic security testing systems.

3. Oracle App Composer

This lets employees turn ideas into enterprise applications without coding expertise. Apps are built with Codex and deployed and operated by Oracle on OCI, with identity, permissions, networking, audit and lifecycle controls applied. It also supports APEXlang, a new Oracle technology that Oracle says avoids producing opaque code that is hard to maintain.

4. Oracle AI SMB Bundle

For smaller companies, Oracle is launching a free-to-start package that includes $12,000 in Oracle cloud credits each year. It brings together ChatGPT Business, Oracle AI Workspace, Codex and App Composer for building apps, OCI for running them and NetSuite QuickStart for core operations such as invoicing and cash flow. Oracle notes that terms, conditions and restrictions apply.

“More businesses are choosing OpenAI as we make it easier to put AI to work through the tools and systems they already use,” said OpenAI president Greg Brockman. Oracle CEO Clay Magouyrk said the suite unites OpenAI’s capabilities “with Oracle applications, data, and cloud infrastructure”.

Why it matters

The chatbot is turning into the front door for business software. Instead of logging into separate ERP, finance and database tools, staff may increasingly work through one AI interface that acts on their behalf. For startups and SMBs, the SMB Bundle is worth a look: annual cloud credits plus ChatGPT Business and an accounting foundation could lower early costs, as long as you read the terms and plan for life after the credits.
