Not every AI rollout only moves forward. At Goldman Sachs, one just moved back.
The bank has barred most of its traders and bankers from using AI coding tools, including Anthropic’s Claude Code and Microsoft’s GitHub, according to Bloomberg. Internal guidance updated in October limits those tools to engineers. Bankers had been allowed to use them for months before a review of productivity and risk led to the change.
Who is affected
The restriction does not cover “strats,” employees whose jobs combine software engineering, quantitative research and trading. Some traders are reportedly frustrated, since they had used the tools to follow client trading, simulate market and position changes, and draft text and visuals.
“After a period of experimentation where we assess a variety of factors including productivity and risk management, we put them in the hands of those who are best suited to leverage them for the long term,” Goldman spokesperson Nick Carcaterra said, according to Bloomberg.
A shift in tone
In July, Goldman CIO Marco Argenti spoke favorably about “vibe coding” by non-technical staff, who would build their own tools and hand them to the bank’s 12,000 engineers for polishing. Goldman has also built its own AI assistant drawing on models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Alphabet.
Why it matters
Large enterprises are moving from open AI experiments to role-based access. Productivity alone does not win; governance, risk and cost now shape who gets which tools.
For AI and developer-tool vendors selling into regulated industries, that means leading with controls: access policies, audit trails and clear use cases by role. Marketing that speaks to CIOs and risk teams, not just end users, will close more deals.
