Mistral Releases the Weights for Large 4, a 1-Trillion-Parameter Model Aimed at Coders and Defenders

Open-weight AI just got a lot bigger. Mistral AI has released the weights for Mistral Large 4, the 1-trillion-parameter, natively multimodal model it first put into public preview earlier this month. The company calls it “Le Chonk.”

Mistral says the version it is releasing now has had three more weeks of reinforcement learning since the preview, with big gains in coding and defensive cybersecurity, plus better reasoning efficiency that lowers inference costs.

Coding results

According to Mistral, Large 4 leads Cognition’s private FrontierCode 2.0 benchmark with a score of 19.7%. On the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index it scores 48%, effectively tied with the leading open-weight model, GLM-5.3, while using 47% fewer tokens per task on average. On Terminal-Bench 4.0, it improved 13 percentage points from the preview to 41%.

The model now offers three reasoning modes, low, medium and high, so developers can trade cost against precision.

A pitch to security teams

Mistral says Large 4 scores 51% on the Artificial Analysis Cyber Index, which measures whether a model can find, reproduce and patch vulnerabilities. It also reports a 96.6% average refusal rate on malicious cyber requests. Mistral admits it has seen potential for uplift in real attacks in live traffic and says it is adjusting its guardrails.

Booz Allen, Cisco, Cloudflare, Rubrik and Zscaler all offered supportive statements. A specialized variant for penetration testing and red-teaming is available in preview to vetted enterprise design partners such as Orange Cyberdefense.

Where to get it, and the license

The weights are on Hugging Face, and the model is also available through Mistral’s API, OpenRouter, Nvidia-hosted endpoints and Microsoft Foundry, which Microsoft says makes it the first cloud provider to offer the model. API pricing is $0.70 per million input tokens and $2.10 per million output tokens.

The license is a modified MIT license. It is free to use, modify, fine-tune and commercialize, but companies offering a Model-as-a-Service business need a separate commercial license from Mistral.

Why it matters

Enterprises that want strong AI without sending data to a third-party API now have another serious open option, and Mistral is leaning hard on sovereignty and self-hosting. That widens the market for GPU infrastructure, MLOps and AI integration services.

For IT vendors and consultancies, open frontier models create new conversations with regulated buyers in finance, government and healthcare. Teams that can deploy, tune and secure these models in-house have a clear offer to take to market.
